A promotional meeting on the standardisation of the next generation of still-image compression will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 23 November 1998. The meeting will be organised by those participating in the ESPRIT working group, EUROSTILL, which is currently involved in a concerted European initiative to develop a consensus on the optimum standard for the next generation still-image compression algorithm (JPEG 2000). This initiative is supported within the framework of the EU's specific RTD programme in the field of Information Technologies (ESPRIT), and the meeting will be the third in a series relevant to the JPEG 2000 standardisation process.

The working group was established to respond to an urgent need for companies, research centres and the EU to develop a consensus on the optimum standard (scope, content and boundaries) for JPEG 2000 which would best serve the short, medium and longer term interests of the European economy. The purpose of the meeting is the promotion of the potential markets, applications and future possibilities for industry with the standardisation of JPEG 2000.

The general objectives of the seminar are to:

- Coordinate the European dimension of JPEG 2000;
- Ensure support for European initiatives in the standardisation process;
- Align with similar initiatives within the European Commission;
- Establish links to planned activities within the European Commission;
- Consider possible related impacts on the Fifth RTD Framework Programme.
