The EU's thematic networks initiative was launched during the Fourth RTD Framework Programme in an effort to support multilateral and multidisciplinary cooperation in RTD initiatives. The objective is to encourage participants to share risks and costs and to increase cross-sectoral research ventures, thus maintaining the competitiveness of European industry. An information day on thematic networks will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 9 November 1998.

The main objectives of the event are to provide participants with comprehensive information on thematic networks under the Fourth RTD Framework Programme and on cooperative activities to be undertaken within the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme. It also aims to make the potential relevance of on-going projects visible to companies, universities and research institutes and to encourage participation in such networks.

The event will focus on issues related to thematic networks and their special characteristics and goals, and will give an overview of participation under the Fourth RTD Framework Programme. A presentation of the Commission publication on thematic networks will also be given, which will address the strategic value of networks within the specific RTD programme in the field of Industrial and Materials Technologies (BRITE-EURAM), provide specific data on its performance, and on ongoing networks which have been created.

There will also be a general practice-oriented workshop on how to create a thematic network, covering all aspects such as rules for participation, partner search, proposal writing and funding. This will be based on the experience gained under the Fourth Framework Programme. In addition, partners in ongoing networks will present their experience within these projects and will discuss issues such as research fields and topics and different network structures.
