Atmospheric measurements from space

A European symposium on atmospheric measurements from space (ESAMS'99) will be held in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, from 18 to 22 January 1999. The event will be organised by the European Space Agency and will focus on the three chemistry instruments which will be flown on ENVISAT. It will also provide a working forum for scientists to exchange information on scientific activities linked to atmospheric measurements. The conference organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers for presentation during the conference.

The first part of the meeting, which will be dedicated to reviewing algorithms, will begin with a general overview of the ENVISAT mission. It will continue with an instrument overview focusing on three atmospheric chemistry instruments, namely GOMOS (Global ozone monitoring by the occultation of stars), MIPAS (Michelson interferometer for passive atmospheric sounding) and SCIMACHY (Scanning imaging absorption spectrometer for atmospheric chartography). The main topic to be addressed will be the review of algorithms used to process data from these instruments. This review will be mainly based on the Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Documents which will be presented by invited speakers.

The second part of the meeting will give scientists the opportunity to brief colleagues informally on recent work, highlighting problems as well as successes. Suggested topics for the scientific programme include:

- Algorithms and calibration;
- Radiative transfer modelling;
- Spectroscopy;
- Retrieval techniques for chemical species and other relevant geophysical parameters;
- Geophysical validation and in-flight calibration;
- Data assimilation;
- Scientific analysis and interpretation of results.
