Euratom FP7: Presentation on Nuclear Research and Innovation in South Africa

As part of efforts to promote South African participation in the Euratom Seventh Framework Programme, a presentation on nuclear research and innovation in South Africa will be held in Brussels on 30 May 2007, in order to sensitise potential European partners to cooperation opportunities with South Africa in this domain.

30 Maja 2007 - 30 Maja 2007
South Africa
Nuclear research and innovation is one of South Africa’s priority frontier science programmes. Flagship projects for example include the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR – http://www.pbmr.co.za(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)) – a High Temperature Reactor, internationally regarded as a leader in nuclear power generation field. Other nuclear research focus areas for example include advanced fluorochemical technology, radiochemicals (medical isotopes), radioactive waste management, theoretical nuclear physics and radiation protection.

South African nuclear research infrastructure includes the SAFARI-1 Nuclear Research Reactor, a sister reactor to the High Flux Reactor of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and the Netherlands Research and Consultancy Group in Petten. South Africa also participates actively in international nuclear research programmes, for example those of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Generation IV International Forum (GIF), and is an associate member of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (based in Dubna, in the Russian Federation.) South Africa is also keen to step up participation in the Euratom Seventh Framework Programme.

The presenation on 30 May 2007 is organised as part of the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP - http://www.esastap.org.za(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)) aimed promoting improved South African participation in FP7, including Euratom.

The presentation will be delivered by Dr Rob Adam, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA – http://www.necsa.co.za.) The presentation will be held on Wednesday afternoon 30 May 2007 at 17:00 at the South African Embassy in Brussels (Rue Montoyer 17-19, Metro: Trone.)

Dr Adam is a former Director-General of the South African Department of Science and Technology. His presentation will be followed by a question and discussion session, after which refreshments will be served to permit informal networking. Proceedings will conclude no later than 19:00. Interested parties are invited to register at: francoise.dassy@belgacom.net .
