Computer modelling of seas and coastal regions

Coastal Engineering '99, an international conference on computer modelling of seas and coastal regions will be held in Lemnos, Greece, from 26 to 28 May 1999. The conference will be organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, UK, and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

The aim of the conference is to address the current need for accurately modelling seas and coastal regions to address problems such as pollution and to design remedial actions. Computer models are an efficient tool to determine the water systems, in combination with remote sensing equipment and experimental sampling techniques. Furthermore, once a disaster occurs, models can be used to determine the extent and consequence of the disaster and aid in the optimisation of the use of available resources.

The conference will address the computer modelling of seas and coastal regions under normal and extreme conditions, with special interest on practical applications currently being carried out around the world. Discussions will also take place on environmental problems of coastal areas which are frequently densely populated, as well as on the topic of coastal protection and remediation work.

The topics to be addressed in detail during the conference will include:

- Shallow water models;
- Pollutant transport and dispersion;
- Sea defence and protection systems;
- Tsunamis, storm surges and typhoons;
- Coastal lakes and lagoons;
- Siltation and dredging.
