An international workshop on exploiting the opportunities of space will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 2 December 1998. This will take place during IST 98, the EU's annual conference and exhibition on Information Society Technologies. The aim of the event is to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about novel, space technology-enabled services and applications, which are rapidly gaining importance in everyday life in the Information Society.

The workshop will be opened with an address by Mr Caspar Einem, the Austrian Minister for Science and Transport, who will discuss key issues relating to space and the Information Society. The rest of the workshop will comprise two panel discussions, on space at the service of the citizen, and on the new Information Society Technologies (IST) programme of the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

The first panel discussion will provide an overview of these new services and their impact on the citizen, and will collect ideas on future directions in this area. Discussions will focus on the wealth of services enabled by space technologies ranging from risk and crisis management, environmental monitoring, telemedicine and tele-education to satellite-based navigation in aeroplanes, ships and cars, personal satellite phones and broadband fixed and mobile access to the Internet.

The objective of the second panel discussion is to gather views on the future challenges and opportunities offered by the new IST programme in space applications and services. This will address how to fully exploit synergy with other parts of the programme and how to increase complementarity and coordination with the European Space Agency and national programmes, as well as discussing the roles of smaller Member States and SMEs in this research.
