The European Space Agency will organise a workshop on advanced life support in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, on 13 and 14 April 1999. The objectives of the event include to review of the status of Europe's life support developments and the identification and prioritisation of future needs. The conclusions are intended to input into the update procedure for the Agency's technological research and development programme.

Discussions during the workshop will focus on the current status of European capability in environmental control and life support and related future technological needs and priorities. The following topics will be discussed in detail during the workshop:

- Life support systems - present capabilities and future needs;
- Development priorities in the particular context of European unmanned space activities;
- Life support technologies of relevance to space missions:
. Air revitalisation;
. Atmosphere composition control and monitoring;
. Water recycling and quality control;
. Solid waste management;
. Bioregenerative life support systems.
