Financing entrepreneurship and innovation

A conference on financing entrepreneurship and innovation in science based industries will be held in Mannheim, Germany, on 22 and 23 January 1999, organised by the Italian Fondazione ENI Enrico Mattei and the Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung (ZEW). The aim of the conference is to address issues related to differences among financial systems in different countries in the context of corporate financing. As the importance of innovation in science-based industries for long-tern economic growth increases, the impact of financial systems on research and development and innovation becomes a crucial aspect of economic performance.

The following topics will be discussed in detail during the conference:

- The empirics of entrepreneurial finance in the EU;
- The impact of finance on R&D spending and innovation;
- The contribution of finance to the emergence of new technology-based firms;
- International differences in the capital structure of science-based firms;
- The supply and demand of venture capital and closed-end funds in the EU;
- The taxation of finance for entrepreneurial ventures and for R&D;
- Issues of corporate governance/finance of science-based industries.

The EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) and the RTD programme in the field of cooperation with third countries and international organisations (INCO) will provide financial support for young researchers from the EU and Central and Eastern Europe who wish to participate.
