The second European LEVERAGE conference and exhibition on collaborative learning and working over networks will be held in Madrid, Spain, on 10 and 11 December 1998. The conference will be the second to be organised within the framework of the LEVERAGE (Learn from video extensive real ATM gigabit experiment) project, of the EU's Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) programme. In the LEVERAGE project, European academics and industrialists have been collaborating to develop a combination of cutting-edge technology and innovative pedagogy.

The particular objectives of the project are to:

- Develop, implement and field trial a complete multimedia network infrastructure to support joint work between the project partners;
- To assess the performance of the multimedia network through an extended trial and evaluation by non-specialist users;
- To determine the potential for the exploitation and commercialisation of networked multimedia systems for wider application in education, industry, public services and commerce.

The conference will comprise a series of plenary sessions, tutorials and case studies which will ensure that all participants are fully up to date with developments in the project. The conference will begin with a series of tutorials on the following:

- Trends and the future of the Internet;
- The design of network-based distributed learning systems;
- Using the Internet for project management courses, a new teaching approach.

Key features of the event will include a presentation on the Advanced Communications, Technologies and Services programme in the context of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme from a representative of the European Commission, DG XIII.
