Marine technology

ODRA'99, the third international conference on marine technology, will be held in Szczecin, Poland, from 11 to 13 October 1999. The event will be organised by the University of Szczecin, Poland, and the Technical University of Wessex, UK, providing a forum for discussion and the exchange of information between ship builders, ship designers, ship operators and the scientific community in general.

The aim of the conference is to examine both traditional and improved techniques in the design, building and operation of ships. Emphasis will be given to modern areas of research and development, such as new and lighter materials, robotics, ergonomics, environmental concerns and other topics. The discussions will take place in the context of the competitiveness of the European ship building industry and the need for not only the development of new technologies, but also their rapid incorporation and implementation.

The conference organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers for presentation during the conference on the following themes:

- Design: philosophy, hydrodynamics and structures;
- CAD/CAM in shipbuilding;
- Materials and fabrication in shipbuilding;
- Ship propulsion, equipment and automation;
- Navigation and ship operation;
- Fast marine craft;
- Reliability and safety in marine technology;
- Ergonomics in ship building;
- Quality assurance in ship technology;
- Environment and ship protection;
- Deep sea systems and vehicles.
