The EuroCourse - 99, "Advanced nuclear reactor design and safety", is timely and pertinent, particularly as it was proposed by the European Commission, DG XII-F.5 and as there is a key action on nuclear fission in the Fifth Framework Programme of research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) of the European Union (EU).

The event is to be held at Garching (Munich), Germany, between 17 and 21 May 1999, when experts from several EU research and university institutes active in this field, and from industry and utilities, are expected to give lectures.

Organised by GRS (Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit mbH), the course will comprise seven chapters, including:

- A short introduction followed by an overview of the RTD Programmes of the EU, and a keynote on the development of advanced reactor safety concepts and related research;
- The fourth chapter will present a state-of-the-art review of current reactor technologies and safety, and provide a reference basis for the main sessions of the course;
- The fifth chapter will be dedicated to advanced reactor technologies. It will deal with safety requirements and advanced reactor design concepts of the EU, of Russia and of other non-EU countries;
- The sixth chapter will be dealing with experimental and analytical research related to advanced reactor safety.

The course will conclude with a summary and evaluation session.

The course lectures will be complemented by a visit to the Bavarian nuclear power plant, Isar II at Ohu, and a presentation of the GRS plant analyser.
