Final Conference | Health Governance Matters: How to Govern Medical Knowledge, Converging Technologies and Neurological Disorders

The purpose of this conference is to inform policy makers, representatives of patient organizations, scientists, and relevant stakeholders about the results of HealthGovMatters, a 3 year FP7 'Science in Society' project. Specific attention will be paid to patients' and professionals' involvement in governing medical technologies and knowledge in relation to epilepsy and mitochondrial disease.

16 Maja 2012 - 16 Maja 2012
Austria
The governance of medical knowledge is far from being a linear process. Rather, medical knowledge - and its production – is governed by multiple actors and factors that impact the way health, illness and disabilities are understood, regulated, and dealt with by European and national health systems and different sectors of society. In the field of neurological disorders, converging technologies have led to new forms of knowledge that shape understandings of the brain and neurological system, as well as the self-identity of patients, families, medical doctors, and scientists. At the same time, new modes of participatory governance have led to a diversification of knowledge holders, knowledge consumers, and interest groups.

The purpose of this conference is to inform policy makers, representatives of patient organizations, scientists, and relevant stakeholders about the results of HealthGovMatters, a three year FP7 ‘Science in Society’ research project co-financed by the European Commission. The aim is to shed light on a highly relevant issue, namely the production and governance of medical knowledge and related implications for science, policy, and health care, as well as patients and their families. The focus will be on new diagnostic, therapeutic, and institutional procedures in the field of neurological disorders - most specifically epilepsy and mitochondrial disease - and associated developments in the field of participatory governance and public awareness activities. Issues to be addressed are:

- Patient/family participation in the production and governance of medical knowledge
- Converging technologies and clinical realities
- Scientization of medical knowledge & public representations of neurological disorders
- Health identities and participatory governance initiatives

The conference will provide both scientific findings resulting from three case studies conducted in Austria, Germany and the UK and policy recommendations drawing on the expertise and experience of the involved researchers. The conference will provide a platform for knowledge exchange and debate and address European, national and local policy makers, scientists, and other relevant stakeholders, including representatives of self-help groups, ethics commissions, patient organisations, journalists, and patients.

This conference is free and open to the public. It will take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on May 16, 2012, from 9am to 3pm.

Pre-registration is required. Limited travel support may be available.
