The relevance of the Information Society to the society of human beings, and the place of knowledge and art in the process will be discussed at a conference in Eisenstadt, Austria, on 27 and 28 September 1999.

The Fifth Framework Programme was founded on the basis that research should contribute to solving the socio-economic problems of society and this conference, 'Libraries, museums and archives as places for integration and civic education', will discuss how this can best be achieved. It asks how far the Information Society is the right way towards an informed society, and what place should it have in processes of civic education. Participants will be invited to assess the contribution of the Information Society to the social and political culture in Europe, and whether it corresponds to the democratic needs of European citizens.

Discussions will take place on the following topics:
- Interpreting and evaluation ongoing transformations;
- Strategies in cultural policies;
- The point of view of practitioners;
- The point of view of initial and ongoing training.For further information please contact:
