European research area discussed in Lisbon
Originally suggested by European Commissioner for Research, Philippe Busquin, the idea of a common research area will be debated by the Ministers, who will focus on three general areas; spreading out national research work in Member States, mapping centres of excellence of European dimension and developing communication networks between the various centres of research.
Some of the major specific measures that are to be discussed in the informal meeting include the following: the necessity of coordinating European national policies in Science, Technology and the Information Society; the creation of a high-speed, broad-band low-cost trans-European data transmission network; the launch of a European initiative to promote scientific and technological culture for European citizens
The debate, which will be chaired by Jose-Mariano, Portuguese Minister for science and technology, has been called at the initiative of the Portuguese presidency.
On the second day, a conference entitled 'European Science beyond 2000' will take in the opinions of 12 Nobel Prize winning scientists. They will converse with the Ministers on what should be the future European strategy for research and development.
In addition, The Secretary General of the European Science Foundation (ESF), the heads of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) will attend the conference.
Representatives of the Association of European Universities, the Confederation of EU Rectors Conferences, COST, the European Industrial Research Management Association, the European Round Table of Industrialists, EUREKA and of the Heads of Research Councils in the Member States (EUROHORCS) are expected to participate.
Representatives of the European Parliament and of the European Economic and Social Committee have also been invited to the discussion.
