Cutting carbon dioxide in cities

The Municipality of Amaroussion in Greece is organising a workshop dealing with action plans for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in cities on 10 July 2000 in Athens.

Organised within the context of a project funded by the EU's THERMIE II programme the event aims to provoke dialogue on how carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced in urban areas. Some of the issues on the agenda are:

- greenhouse effect and climate change;
- measures to improve energy efficiency;
- local measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in each of the sectors examined during the THERMIE-funded project (such as household, transport and businesses);
- examples of the cities that participated in the project (Amaroussion, Vienna, Brescia);
- funding opportunities for the formulation of action plans for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in cities.

Speakers will include representatives of ministries, the European Commission, the National Committee for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, project partners, elected members and officers of local authorities, and experts in the field of reduction in carbon dioxide emission in cities.
