Genetics in Europe open days 2000

Brussels is just one of a number of European cities hosting the genetics in Europe open days as part of this year's European Science week (6 to 12 November 2000). The events aim to bring together scientists, lawyers and journalists to discuss the benefits, promises and problems of genetic research.
Conferences and round tables will open to the public in Barcelona, London, Milan, Heidelberg and Brussels.
The Brussels open day is on 16 November and will be opened by Albert Scoville (permanent secretary, Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, Brussels), H.E. Gaetano Cortese (Italian Ambassador to the King of Belgium), Bruno Hansen (Director for Life Sciences, European Commission Research DG) and Leonard Santi (of the European Commission's high level group on biosceince).
Discussions will revolve around the following topics:
- science, culture and innovation;
- implications of the new genetics for developing countries;
- WHO's position in relation to new developments in human genetics;
- the wider responsibilities of scientists: science and society and the future of science;
- genetics: predicting the future.
The Genetics in Europe open days (GEOD) organisers will also present nine journalism awards for the best news stories completed for TV, radio, Internet or print media in Italy, Germany and Spain.
