Conscious of the need to explain some of the mechanics of how the technologies concern work and how the European Union's Information society technologies (IST) fits into this, a conference on 7 March in Brussels organised by the IST Diffuse project, will explain some of the issues concerned and what to expect next.

One of the European Commission's major goals is to use the information society to increase employability of its citizens and reduce social exclusion. But this will only be possible if all the citizens are aware of and comfortable with the technology that is being introduced.

The ability to access information on the world wide web, regulatory issues, use and development of wireless services, rights issues and use of interactive television services all feature on the agenda, as will progress in relevant IST programmes.

The Diffuse project is actively collaborating with the IST C-ECOM programme to provide an open platform within the European standardisation environment, in the hope that it will lead to more effective e-commerce standardisation. The C-ECOM will hold its own conference the day after Diffuse, in the same location.

The target audience for the conference is research communities, standards developers, application developers and ICT service providers.
