A workshop organised by the European Commission which aims to analyse and address the challenges presented by e-marketplaces, will take place in Brussels on 23 and 24 April.

'E-marketplaces: new challenges for enterprise policy, competition and standardisation' is part of the 'Go digital' implementation plan to be adopted as a follow up of the Europe action plan 2002, with special emphasis on helping SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) go digital. The event is being organised by the European Commission's DG Enterprise in close collaboration with DG Information society and DG Competition. Its main objective will be to identify future priorities for enterprise and standardisation in order to facilitate open non-discriminatory e-marketplaces.

The findings of the workshop may have a bearing on shaping future enterprise policy. The event targets representatives from the Commission, Member States and business and will be opened by European Commissioner for Enterprise and Information society, Erkki Liikanen.

The event will be divided up into three sessions, concentrating on scene setting, standardisation and competition respectively. It will also include a debate on how enterprise policy could help the creation of e-marketplaces in Europe.
