Swedish presidency focuses on bioethics in research

The ethical aspects of biotechnology and biomedical research will be under the spotlight at a conference organised by the Swedish Ministry of Education and Science in Umeå, Sweden on 11 and 12 June.
This is a particularly topical issue due to both the increasingly rapid developments within biotechnology and some signs of a lack of confidence in this research by parts of the European general public.
The conference will review the current state of knowledge in chosen areas of research, primarily in human health, and discuss the legislative framework. It will focus on a number of case studies in different phases, ranging from recent scientific discoveries to ones where expected applications have triggered proposals for new legislation.
Around 250 delegates are attending the conference, representing researchers, research financing agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the general public.
