Commission workshop to examine geographical data in environmental policy-making

The eighth European Commission GI & GIS (geographic information and geographic information systems) workshop will take place in Dublin, Ireland, from 3 to 5 July 2002. The event will examine the 'Environmental European spatial data infrastructure' (E-ESDI), which aims to provide geographical information for environmental policy-making in the EU.

The workshop, 'European spatial data infrastructure: a work in progress,' is being organised by the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the GINIE (geographic information network in Europe) project. Topics will include SDI (spatial data infrastructure) initiatives, E-ESDI development, eEurope, and the transition from FP4 (the Fourth Framework programme for research) to FP5 (the Fifth Framework programme for research). This latter topic will include an examination of research needs and lessons from EC-funded projects.

The GINIE project is an accompanying measure of the FP5 IST programme, which aims to develop the European graphic information strategy and to raise awareness and build the capacity of geographic information.For further information, please contact:
