European conference to improve agriculture and food production

The decrease in trust of European citizens in the agricultural and food protection sectors following food safety scares such as BSE, Dioxine and FMD is just one of the issues to be addressed by a European conference in Brussels on 14 and 15 October.
'How can research on food and agriculture in Europe better respond to citizens expectations and demands?' is being organised by EURAGRI and co-sponsored by the Commission's DG Research and the European Economic and Social Committee's (ESC), Agriculture, rural development and environment section.
The conference seeks to bring together at a European level representatives of all stakeholders who together form the new context for food and agriculture research, with representatives of the agricultural research organisations (EURAGRI members, accession countries and others). Participants will include politicians, policy makers, industry, trade, farmers, consumers, international organisations, new EU member states, non governmental organisations (NGOs), academia (notably disciplines outside the traditional agricultural sciences) and the media.
The conference aims to analyse the conflicts between goals and values in the European agricultural research system in its present state of organisation, in its relationship with other groups of society as well as its orientation of programmes and priorities. It hopes to define new goals and new roles for an agricultural and food production knowledge system, including the establishment of new linkages to its stakeholders and beneficiaries within Europe and the building blocks for a new system of management, priority setting and programme function in a complex society.
The conference will end with a general discussion with commissioner Busquin on how to design the evolution of the food and agriculture research system within the European research area (ERA) and the Framework programmes.For further information, please e-mail: euragri@co.wag-ur.nl
