Open Conference to discuss Web Services, Grid Services and the Semantic Web

The final conference of the Commission funded IST (information society technologies) Diffuse project will tackle the question of 'Convergence of web services, grid services and the semantic web for delivering e-services' in Brussels on 12 December.
Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society, Erkki Liikanen, will provide the opening keynote address at the event, which will review, explore and discuss the strategic issues concerning and surrounding the three interrelated technologies of web services, grid services and the semantic web from a broad perspective.
In addition to providing a strategic overview of these technologies, the conference will explore their relationships regarding the innovation, knowledge, enterprise and economic aspects. It will identify and discuss the critical points to facilitate further development, especially in Europe, and what strategic measures and actions are needed from the stakeholders.
The conference programme also includes keynote speeches from Carl Kesselman (a founder of the Grid), Bruce Perens (primary author of the Open Source Definition), Guus Schreiber (co-chair, W3C Web Ontology) and the European Commission. Senior speakers from ABN AMRO Trust, BEA, Deutsche Telekom/Berkom, IBM, Sun, TIEKE and Universities of Heidelberg and Toronto will also contribute. There will be opportunity of interactive discussions and statements from some of the expected 200 participants.
The Diffuse project was set up in February 2000 to provide a single, neutral entry point for up-to-date reference and guidance information on current and emerging standards and specifications that facilitate the electronic exchange of information focussing on e-commerce and information management. Diffuse.org is regularly cited as an authoritative information source by users. It is visited by over 4000 users from over 100 countries every week.
