A one-day conference is being held in London, UK, on 1 December to present a new EU funded Integrated Project called LIPGENE, which will carry out research into the metabolic syndrome.

The term 'metabolic syndrome' refers to a clustering of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. While the prevalence of this disease is unknown, estimates suggest that by 2010 some 31 million Europeans will require treatment for diabetes and its related complications.

LIPGENE aims to contribute to a reduction in the economic and social burden of the metabolic syndrome through research that will optimise the health impacts of dietary fat change. The conference itself will examine the implications of the increasing prevalence of the metabolic syndrome from a number of perspectives, including:
- diet-gene interactions in its development;
- the economic cost;
- consumer attitudes and perceptions;
- the potential of modern technology, including plant biotechnology and animal nutrition in tackling the metabolic syndrome;
- an outline of the LIPGENE project and how it aims to tackle the spread of the metabolic syndrome.For further information, please consult the following web address:
