The European Commission is sponsoring the First World Conference on Transport Telematics Applications, entitled "The intelligent road". It will take place in Paris from 30 November to 3 December 1994.

The event is intended to act as a basis for international cooperation between policy-makers, experts, and infrastructure users. It is also intended for the general public and for the exchange of views on how new telematics technologies can be exploited.

Telematics can significantly improve the safety and efficiency of transport. Coupled with the ever-growing demand for mobility, this will greatly increase the urgency of getting existing technologies deployed and developing new ones for the future. These goals are common to all countries. There is therefore an increasing need to share experiences and costs.

As a result, ERTICO (European Road Transport Telematics Implementation Coordination Organization) in Europe, VERTIS (Vehicle, Road and Transportation Intelligence) in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, ITS (Intelligence Transport System) in the USA and Canada, and the equivalent organizations in other countries have decided to organize a series of world conferences.

These conferences will assist the exchange of information, the comparison of experiences and the development of new projects in pursuit of solutions on a global scale.

The conference will be opened by Mr. Eduard Balladur, Prime Minister of France, Mr. Al Gore, Vice-President of the USA, and Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, Japanese Ambassador in France. Mr. Martin Bangemann, European Commissioner, Mr. Bernard Bosson, French Minister for Public Works, Transport and Tourism, Mr. Brian MaWhinney, UK Secretary of State for Transport, Mr. Federico Pena, US Secretary of Transportation, and Mr. Matthias Wissman, German Minister for Transport, will then present their views on transport and the impact of telematics on mobility.

The conference will be followed by a round-table meeting of industrialists. The final two days will be devoted to technical sessions on possible telematic solutions to universal transport problems.

In addition, the latest technological advances will be demonstrated in an exhibition featuring more than 30 projects from the Community's activities in the field of transport telematics applications.
