The Institute for Audiovisual and Telecommunications in Europe (IDATE) is organizing its seventeenth annual conference under the title "Lessons from Geneva". The conference, which is supported by the European Commission, will be held in Montpellier, France, on 16-17 November 1995.

The conference will examine the lessons to be learnt from the International Telecommunications Union's world exhibition which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, just one month before (October 1995). This exhibition, held every four years, brings together virtually all equipment suppliers and operators and features a profusion of announcements, new product presentations and industrial agreements.

The aim of the IDATE conference is to provide an opportunity for reflection on the results of world exhibition and for putting latest developments into perspective at a time when the liberalization of markets and the software agents of cyberspace are likely to overturn established positions.

For those who were present at the Geneva event, the IDATE conference will provide an opportunity for comparing observations and ranking the importance of the information acquired, For others, is will be an opportunity to discover the principal facts emerging from the exhibition and lessons to be drawn.

The conference will be structured around the following four themes:

- Innovation and technological maturity;
- Convergence and newcomers;
- The users' view;
- Towards a new world telecommunications order.
