An advanced workshop on biotechnology and bioethics will be held in Bilbao, Spain, on 1-5 July 1996. The workshop is being organized by the Spanish University of Deusto, within the framework of the Community's specific R&D programme in the field of biotechnology.

In recent years, much debate has been conducted on bioethics in relation to biomedical sciences and biotechnologies and this issue is becoming increasingly important. The workshop is intended to offer participants the opportunity to discuss ethical and legal aspects of applying biotechnology in the health sector and related industries. The objective is to help participants to identify ethical and legal problems which may occur in the pursuit of their activities and guide them as to how to solve these problems.

The workshop will contribute to the preparation of the European Doctorate in biotechnology, which is presently being developed in collaboration with the European Commission.

The event is aimed primarily at postgraduate students of medicine, biology, chemistry, pharmacy, ethics, philosophy and law. Other participants will include scientists and professionals working in hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, other related industries and experimental farms, as well as professors and academics working in these fields.

Participants will be selected on the basis of their professional experience in, or knowledge of, biotechnology. They will also be required to have an adequate understanding of English, Spanish or French.
