The European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL) is organizing a symposium entitled "Integrated Applications for Risk Assessment and Disaster Prevention for the Mediterranean". The symposium, which will be held in Malta on 20-23 May 1996, is co-sponsored by the European Commission (DG I), the Council of Europe and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Each year, the EARSeL holds a general assembly aimed at bringing together the European remote sensing scientific and user communities to facilitate contacts and exchanges of experience between laboratories and companies. The purpose of this year's symposium, which is tied in with the EARSeL's general assembly, is to initiate dialogue between the national and international agencies involved in combating hazards and preventing disasters, remote sensing specialists from Europe and the Meditterranean, and the environmental user communities.

Papers will be presented orally and by poster and will be followed by round-table discussions focusing on the theme "Towards creating Euro-Med remote sensing networks". The aim of the round-table discussions is to produce strategies in technical cooperation focusing on making remote sensing operational in the Mediterranean region. It is expected that these discussions will stimulate the development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements which would lead, in the short-term, to scientific research and training networks and, in the long-term, to an integrated Euro-Med environmental management approach.
