The European Environment Conference, organized by ERP Environment (UK), will be held at the University of Leeds, UK, on 16-17 September 1996.

The conference, which will address a wide range of issues relating to public policies for the protection of the environment, will feature a keynote address by Mr. Scott Brockett, of DG XI (Environment, nuclear safety and civil protection) of the European Commission, on "The formulation and design of EU environmental policy". Issues to be addressed during the conference include:

- Innovative approaches to environmental policy;
- Environmental assessment and the precautionary principle;
- Integration, harmonization and transboundary environmental protection;
- Economic instruments for environmental protection;
- The implementation and impact of environmental policy;
- Spatial planning and the environment;
- Self-regulation and voluntary environmental policy;
- Conservation and ecological protection;
- Environmental education and public participation;
- Policy approaches to waste management.

The "European Environment Conference" will be followed by the "Business Strategy and Environment Conference", to take place on 19-20 September 1996 at the same venue. This second conference will focus more specifically on environmental questions and issues as they relate to business. Topics to be addressed include, among others: product development and product management; questions surrounding the "greening" process; and environmental management systems. The conference will also look at case studies from the business world.
