Linking information systems
The main focus of the seminar will be on the interlinking of information systems in the European Union. The research activities to be reported on will include:
- Client server applications for information systems outlining the findings of a survey conducted on behalf of the European Commission;
- Advances in visual interface, with an outline paper on relevant aspects in pictorial interfaces and indexing and retrieval;
- The development of software agents and their role and evolving function in collecting knowledge over the networks.
Another relevant aspect is related to the exploitation of information stored in systems and their integration into other information systems to improve communication between disparate environments. This approach has been developed within the SESAM project which addresses the exploitation of library catalogues for ready-to-use information on academic material.
The SESAM project has been undertaken by a research group consisting of: the Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche (IT); 3D Informatica (IT); the University of Central Lancashire (UK); the Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven (B) and the Universita La Sapienza (IT).
