A workshop on "Advances and challenges in catalytic activation and functionalization of light alkanes" will be held in Estoril, Portugal, from 25 May to 7 June 1997. The workshop, which will take place within the framework of a NATO Advanced Study Institute on the same topic, is being supported by the European Commission within the framework of the Community's BRITE/EURAM programme for R&D in the field of Industrial and Materials Technologies.

The workshop will bring together academic and industrial scientists with the aim of:

- Identifying challenges for progress in light alkanes activation, with special emphasis on material science, energy conservation and intensive and selective procedures;
- Proposing and evaluating new routes for light alkanes activation and functionalization.

It is foreseen that the workshop will stimulate several joint research programmes in Europe involving academic and industrial partners interested in light alkanes activation and functionalization. In addition, it is intended to provide insight and recommendations to research groups involved in research projects sponsored by the EC under area 1.2.2.L of the BRITE/EURAM programme.
