A working conference on "Electronic commerce in the framework of Mediterranean countries' development" will be held in Metsovo, Greece, on 4-6 July 1997. The conference is being organized by the EGNATIA EPIRUS Foundation in Greece, with support from the European Commission (DG III).

Researchers, experts and others are being invited to the conference in order to join in the development of a strategic approach to the introduction and use of electronic commerce in Mediterranean countries, within the framework of the global marketplace. The main areas to be addressed will include:

- Issues relating to technological development;
- Legal and regulatory issues;
- The Global Marketplace for SMEs;
- Social and employment issues.

The conference will include presentations by representatives from each country participating in the EUROMED programme, as well as presentations by a number of keynote speakers. These presentations will be followed by four workshops in which issues ranging from needs and requirements to technology and applications will be discussed. The four main areas to be covered by the workshops will be tourism, maritime industry, chemicals and textiles, the major areas of interest for EUROMED countries.
