A "Euroconference" workshop for young accounting scholars, entitled "Mapping diversity in practices and theories of managerial control", will take place in Palermo, Italy, on 7-11 December 1997. The workshop is organized by the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM), with support from the Community's specific programme for the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR).

The aim of the workshop is to explore the lessons to be learned from comparing and contrasting the variety of national traditions in accounting research and practice in the European Union. Participants and invited speakers will explore the potential of national research traditions and practices, taking account of their specific social and economic contexts.

"Mapping Diversity" is the first in a series of three workshops organized by EIASM with support from the TMR "Euroconferences" programme. The second workshop, "Exploring Relevance", will be held in Ireland in 1998 and the third, "Implications for Research and Education", in the Eastern part of Germany in 1999.

The workshops will be introduced by invited speakers, followed by single and group presentations from participants. There will also be time for group work. The number of participants will be limited to create a stimulating environment.

Contributions for the first event are now invited. These should address national traditions of academic inquiry and education, institutions of professional practice, the roles of management accounting practitioners, and the inter-relationships between them. The deadline for applications is 15 October 1997.
