A two-day colloquium on "Personal communications in the 21st Century" will be held in London, UK, on 5-6 February 1998. The colloquium, organized by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), will examine the evolution of personal communications into the 21st Century.

Mobile and cellular communications developments continue to advance with increasing pace. Second generation GSM networks are now evolving to support a range of new applications, whilst private mobile radio and satellite mobile services are offering an ever wider range of communications options. Considerable progress is being made in specifying a third generation system which will support multimedia services operating across a variety of networks and operators.

This two day event is intended to provide an overview of the evolution in this sector to date and of perspectives for the future. The first day will include a range of invited speakers to provide updates on the emerging shape of the market, technology, regulatory and spectrum aspects. The second day will cover topics in more detail, including:

- Service integration across a variety of networks;
- Network architecture to support multimedia services;
- Evolution to UMTS from GSM;
- Technologies for adaptable air interface;
- Terminal developments;
- Updates on research programmes, including the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS);
