The East Midland Innovation Relay Centre in the UK is organizing an event, entitled "Take Time out to Innovate", aimed essentially at the business community of the West Midlands. The event, which will run from 30 March to 1 April 1998, is being organized in conjunction with the local United Kingdom Government Office and the Department of Trade and Industry's Innovation Unit as part of the programme of events for the UK Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers.

"Take Time out to Innovate" will focus on the role of innovation in its broadest sense - spanning a full range of activities from research and development to management and operational issues. Participants are expected to include members of the West Midlands business community interested in finding out how to make innovation work harder for them, along with like-minded colleagues from universities, local authorities, business links, Chambers of Commerce, Training and Enterprise Councils and Government.

The three-day event will include a wide range of activities, including practical seminars, workshops and exhibitions. In particular, participants will have the opportunity to hear one of the UK's top innovators, Richard Branson, talk about innovation management. Thanks to a simultaneous satellite broadcast of "An audience with Richard Branson" - conducted in front of a live audience assembled at the British Academy for Film and Television Arts - there will be the opportunity to put questions and comments to Mr. Branson directly.

In addition, the latest winners of SMART Awards - a Department of Trade and Industry scheme to help small and medium-sized enterprises improve their competitiveness by developing new products and processes - will receive their Awards at a special ceremony on Tuesday, 31 March 1998.
