Two pharmacokinetics courses aimed at pharmaceutical and biomedical scientists, will be held in Malta from 6 to 15 September 1998. The courses are organized by the University of Malta, in collaboration with the University of Pisa, Italy and the University of Minnesota, USA. One of the main subjects to be covered will be current EU legislation on proprietary medicine and its relation to FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) requirements.

The courses have been designed to cover the fundamental principles and applications of pharmacokinetics in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. The programme will be of interest to those who wish to acquire a good working knowledge of the basic concepts in pharmacokinetics, and to apply pharmacokinetic principles in patient care and drug development arenas. Concepts will be covered in depth in lectures, and problem-solving will be emphasized in the workshops.

A five-day introductory course will cover the following topics:

- Clearance concepts;
- Renal and hepatic elimination;
- Drug distribution;
- Bioequivalence;
- Multiple dose regimens;
- Multi-compartment models;
- Non-compartmental analysis;
- Pharmacokinetic basis of drug interactions;
- Non-linear pharmacokinetics;
- Pharmacokinetics of chiral drugs;
- Pharmacodynamic models;
- Variability and individualization;
- Ocular pharmacokinetics.

A two day intermediate level course will cover:

- Simulation of pharmacokinetic models - STELLA;
- Population pharmacokinetic analysis;
- Individual and average bioequivalence;
- Statistical moment analysis application.
