Research programme (Euratom, EEC) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - Solar energy -, 1980-1983

Two ageing-test chambers for solar energy installations were constructed at the Ispra Establishment of the Joint Research Centre, together with two new facilities for the study of underground seasonal heat storage in water and directly in the soil.

The European Solar Test Installation (ETSI), the largest installation in Europe in 1981 for studying the effectiveness and strength of photothermal and photovoltaic converters, became operational in 1981.
To define and improve test procedures and standard methodologies for the evaluation of performance of components and systems; to elaborate and to apply test methods for the evaluation of durability and reliability, and for the qualification of components; to monitor plants; and to collect and exploit data on a common basis from projects funded or coordinated by the Commission, providing an effective feedback from Community R&D projects.
Four projects:

- European Solar Test Installation (ESTI);

- Solar energy for habitat and low-temperature applications;

- Solar power plant materials;

- Photo-electrochemical and photo-chemical conversion.
