5G experimentation environment for 3rd party media services

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - 5GMediaHUB (5G experimentation environment for 3rd party media services)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2022-07-01 do 2024-06-30

One of the main outputs from the 5GMediaHub project is the creation and establishment of a 5G experimentation facility that will allow for the development and testing of vertical applications specifically for the media industry. The 5GMediaHUB Experimentation Facility offers a DevOps environment for use case experimenters and NetApp developers in the Media & Entertainment industry, that hides the complexity of service development and deployment at the underlying 5G infrastructure. Through this platform, the use case experimenters were able to test their use cases performance without requiring any prior knowledge on how the 5G network works. NetApp developers on the other hand will gain access to open source NetApps and VNFs they can reuse in their NetApps along with validation tests for ensuring the KPIs are met. The 5GMediaHub platform also facilitates the development of NetApps that will provide the ability to develop applications that can be deployed directly within the core network itself, that comprises the 5G infrastructure, thereby reducing complexity in the vertical applications and increasing their time to market.https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/grants-app/reporting/VAADIN/themes/sygma/icons/ico6-save.png
The work in 5GMediaHUB is split in WP1-WP8. In what follows, a summary of the work done and main results in WP1-WP6 is included:

WP1: Use cases, requirements elicitation, specifications and architecture
The most important results from WP1 are:
• Project-wide architecture defined, with the design of the main Experimentation Tools and engines.
• All use-case scenarios successfully elaborated and involved NetApps were identified.
• Definition of Experimentation and KPI Validation workflows; definition of the innovative DevOPS driven TaaS workflow.
• Grouping of specific requirements for stakeholders, use case and scenarios.
• Definition of functional and non-functional requirements which have been mapped onto 5GMediaHUB components.

WP2: 5GMediaHUB Experimentation Facility implementation
• Implementation of the NetApps repository and integration with ETSI OSM
• Tenant Web Portal implemented and deployed
• Implementation of the Resource Reservation engine
• Implementation and deployment of the Validation and Verification engine
• User Management Module (UMM) implemented and integrated with the Portal

WP3: Integration, deployment and dry-run testing
• Definition of the physical and virtual infrastructure needed for hosting the experimentation facility;
• Definition of the intra-experimentation-facility APIs;
• Described the interfacing and deployment of the 5GMediaHUB experimentation tools
• 3 Dry-run tests validating the use of the 5GMediaHUB paltform components (Portal and experimentation engines) were delivered

WP4: Experimentation Facility validation through realistic use cases
• Complete definition of the pilots status, components and tasks
• Initial coordination with testbed owners, tool owners and WP3 integration efforts.
• Testing Cycles 1 and 2 were successfully executed for all UC scenarios

WP5: Commercialisation, Innovation management and standardisation
• A detailed market assessment was conducted
• Partner-specific exploitation plans were presented covering their market drivers, customers and competitors.
• Detailed assessment of the 5GMediaHUB Experimentation Facility business opportunity was conducted
• Potential business models for specific 5GMediaHUB assets have been explored
• Three patent filings.
• 13 contributions to SDOs

WP6: Dissemination, Communication and scale-up
• Participation in the 5GPPP webinar “5G Innovations for Verticals” (March 2021)
• Contribution to the European 5G Annual Journal (pp. 102-13) and 5GPPP 3 Projects – Phase 3 Brochure (p. 50)
• A virtual workshop jointly organised by 5GMediaHUB and 5G-EPICENTRE
• Participation with a booth in MWC 2021
• 5GMediaHUB featured in KitPlusTV
• Participation with an exhibition booth in MWC 2022, EuCNC 2022 and IoT Solutions World Congress 2022
The following provides a brief summary of the progress made on the innovation streams where the project aims to create impact that is beyond state-of-the-art (SoTA):
IS1: Dynamic end-to-end slice management
o This innovation stream relates to efficient delivery of high-quality of service/experience (QoS/QoE) on complex 5G networks, through optimum delivery of network services. As such, contributions in this area are seen as being broadly applicable with potential for impact across a wide range of 5G services.

IS2: DevOps experimentation and service validation
o 5GMediaHUB focused on a DevOps-driven Testing-as-a-Service (TaaS) approach that extends the work of previous projects, such as 5G-TANGO and 5G-MEDIA that mainly focused on the development processes of 5G-based software. 5GMediaHUB instead focused on the Operations processes of launched services and their continuous performance monitoring, which are areas that have received insufficient attention.

IS3: QoE in 5G networks based on SDN and NFV
o The delivered a QoS/QoE Engine. The goal of this engine is to employ network and service KPIs to predict the client’s QoE, allowing the system to signal for video quality degradation, if and when required, to prevent stalling events.

IS4: Unified service orchestration in 5G PaaS
o 5GMediaHUB has defined a reference architecture for a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) abstraction layer for NetApps. This PaaS layer uses "cloud-native" design principles and is based on container technologies, meaning that the client utilising the PaaS layer does not manage the underlying infrastructure, including the network, servers, operating systems, storage, etc. and can instead focus on the application(s) being deployed on the platform.

IS5: Security framework applied using Software Defined Perimeters in 5G networks
o 5GMediaHUB has deployed, configured and integrated an open-source Software Defined Perimeter (SDP) software stack with the 5GMediaHUB Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI).

IS6: NetApps and Northbound APIs
o One of the key contributions from the project to realise this goal is the NetApps Repository application, which was developed as part of the 5GMediaHub platform. It allows developers to rapidly design, build and deploy their NetApps on 5G infrastructure. This represents a substantial step forward in terms of facilitating the NetApp/VNF onboarding process, supporting unchanged containerized and VM-based NetApps.

Moreover, 5GMediaHUB performed a number of activities to understand the potential market impact of 5GMediaHUB. The following elements have been covered:
1. an overview of the proposed 5GMediaHUB commercialisation strategy,
2. an overview of the market that the 5GMediaHUB project could potentially impact,
3. commercial partners’ exploitation plans,
4. proposed 5GMediaHUB Experimentation Facility business models and commercialization plan
