Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Poly-substituted aromatics (PSAs) are of paramount importance in Organic Chemistry (synthesis intermediates), Medicinal Chemistry (pharmaceutical compounds) and material Science. The highly hindered nature of these compounds makes their synthesis a longstanding challenge for the synthetic community.
Thus, the development of tools that will allow us to access them in a selective manner are of interest. ElectroPheX aims to develop synthetic methodologies that successfully access poly-substituted aromatics by first halogenate (X) Phenols under Electrochemical conditions.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Three different methodologies for the site-selective halogenation of phenols have been proposed. During the last 24 months it was shown whether these methods can be candidates to solve this challenging problem. Valuable information has been acquired that will help address the issues in a more efficient way.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

A novel methodology for the selective functionalization of every position of a phenolic ring will be developed that will have a translational impact on multiple research areas (Medicinal Chemistry, Radiolabelling, Organic Chemistry, material Science).
