Periodic Reporting for period 1 - StoRIES (Storage Research Infrastructure Eco-System)
Okres sprawozdawczy: 2021-11-01 do 2023-04-30
MO1: Foster an EU eco-system of industry & research organisations on hybrid ES technologies, involving at least 200 organisations, to develop novel concepts and technologies improving the performance of ES devices with a view to make them more competitive and reducing costs.
MO2: Provide EU industrial and academic researchers access to world-class materials and ES related RIs needed for the development of new technologies and fostering innovation.
MO3: Enlarge and advance the integration of the EU ES community through new cross-border and interdisciplinary services between the operators of RIs, universities, and industry. The focus will be on improving materials for devices and optimizing hybrid ES systems.
MO4: Enhance innovation by involving industry experts in the setting up and implementing of a pro-active innovation support scheme by knowledge and data sharing following FAIR principles (FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and by the selection, the socio-economic evaluation, and the promotion of innovative technologies.
MO5: Ensure the long-term sustainability of ES research by
SO5a: defining scenarios and strategic roadmaps for the future integration of facilities from the research and industry community for accelerating the development of ES technologies.
SO5b: setting up a framework for the scientific and technical training of young researchers (at least 200) from academia and industry, which will be vital for sustaining the innovation process.
MO6: Establish a EU reference organisation to promote and coordinate the international cooperation in ES research from and to Europe.
MO2: Procedures and rules for StoRIES TNA were developed and 3 calls for proposals were published, resulting in 4 applications for the 1st and 10 for the 2nd call. Results of the 3rd call will be known in Aug. 2023.
MO3: Sound innovation management procedures and appropriate identification and management of exploitable results are established throughout the project lifetime to ensure a high level of industrial collaboration and increase the innovation potential of the project. Several activities have been started including 1) development and adaptation of a practical assessment framework to identify key criteria for materials to device integration; 2) testing, validation and deployment of a materials intelligence platform (MIP) for the use of consortium members and extended partners and 3) identification of opportunities and use cases for hybridisation at a system level.
MO4: Key ES technologies in view of new materials, components and their performance matrix for hybridisation were identified and a multi-domain (thermal-electrical) technical reference case was developed, to identify and understand synergy potentials and to solve methodological issues that arise in cross-domain hybridisation. Two workshops ("Scale-up of Energy Materials" and "Benchmarking for Hybrid Storage") with more that 70 participants each, where organized in March 2023 in Karlsruhe. Different methodologies and tools to assess the technical and socio-economics performance of ES technologies were harmonized. An online workshop “FAIR and open data for environmental, techno-economic and socio-economic assessments” has been held in Oct. 2022.
MO5/SO5a: The StoRIES consortium together with external stakeholders was drafting two key documents, the Technology Roadmap and the SRIA, that will support the identification of the future EU energetic landscape and accelerate the development and integration of future hybrid ES technologies. The Technology Roadmap is a document that supports strategic and long-range planning, by identifying short- and long-term goals in all the areas covered whereas the SRIA is a concise, easy-to-read, and visualized document that identifies the key R&D&I challenges which must be addressed in Europe to give a leading edge in ES hybridisation development and implementation. In March 2023 a workshop with more than 100 internal and external stakeholders was taking place in Karlsruhe where the 1st draft of the Roadmap was disseminated and current and future applications for hybrid ES were defined as input for updating the roadmap.
MO5/SO5b: Activities in the task “Education, training and international mobility” started including 1) establishement of a StoRIES PhD Network; 2) a Mentoring Programme for PhD students dealing with hybrid ES; 3) annual Summer Schools for young scientists and 4); 9 online courses for academia and industry.
MO6: Different activities were carried out to connect to international stakeholders e.g.; strengthening contacts to NRCan (CA) and initiate contacts with US organizations (DOE, NSF) at the 7th Mission Innovation Ministerial conference in Pittsburgh in Sept. 2022 and the organization of an internat. series of workshops “Energy Materials for Innovation” (EM4I) together with EERA.
StoRIES’ objectives and WP activities are enhancing synergies and complementary capabilities among existing infrastructures, leading to improved and harmonised services and are fostering economies of scale and improved use of resources across Europe thanks to less duplication of services, common development and optimisation of operations. Users, both from the scientific and industrial community, benefit from integrated and efficient access to the best RIs as well as from advanced services addressing their specific needs. This enables breakthrough research and innovation across the whole value chain and in line with a life-cycle approach, in view of possible industrial applications. It also fosters the development of new skills and a new generation of researchers ready to optimally exploit the most advanced and essential instruments and resources for research and innovation addressing Green Deal challenges.
