This deliverable will report the exploration of using measurements of high clouds and contrails within the ICON global forecasting system to improve the representation of humidity and the prediction of contrails.Linked to T2.1.
Concept of an ice cloud microphysics module of intermediate complexity for application in numerical weather prediction (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)The deliverable will describe an ice cloud parameterisation for a weather model, in this case the ICON weather model, that allows: 1) ice supersaturation in clear sky, 2) that initiates cirrus formation only at certain degrees of supersaturation (temperature dependent, homogeneous nucleation), 3) that does consume the excess water vapour (i.e. the fraction above saturation) not instantaneously but following its thermodynamic force (that is, the crystal growth rate is proportional to the degree of supersaturation); this allows to have supersaturation within clouds as observed, and4) point 3 above works in the same way at subsaturation, i.e. the rate of crystal sublimation is proportional to the degree of subsaturation, such that cirrus clouds can survive for a while at subsaturated conditions, as observed. The deliverable will also report on tests of this new parameterisation within offline-runs of ICON for several situations.Linked to T2.3.
Description on training and testing datasets (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This is a report containing detailed information about datasets sources formats and corresponding preprocessing will be produced highlighting in particular the underlying labeling methodology where appropriate This will serve as a basis to avoid biases in AI algorithms and will also ensure consistent use of data across the several project WPsLinked to T31 T13 T11 T14
The humidity analyses and the degree of supersaturation (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This deliverable will include the results of humidity analysis and the calculation of the degree of supersaturations. The aim is to identify humidity variability associated to different measurements. Such comparison is essential for AI algorithm training in WP3.Linked to T1.1 and T1.4.
The development and calculation of robust algorithmic cost functions for climate change of H2O, NOx, and contrail cirrus (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This deliverable will document the development and calculation of robust algorithmic cost functions (ACFs) for climate change of non-CO2 effects, e.g., H2O, NOx, and contrail cirrus. The developed ACFs will serve the basis for the further assessment of the new policy driven flight planning.Linked to T5.1 and T5.2.
Algorithmic specification of contrails detection AI algorithms (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This report documents details of the mathematical formalization of AI algorithms, their architectures and their properties will be produced. This document will articulate the proposed approaches with state-of-the-art algorithms already proven successful in other relevant contexts.Linked to T3.1 and T3.2.
Upgraded instrumentation and Lidar inversion software (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This deliverables will report the upgrades of instrumentation, e.g., Lidar or flash sondes, for systematic operations. The optimized instrumentation is important for collecting water vapour/ice cloud information to be used in analysing the humidity and degree of supersatuaration in D1.2. Linked to T1.1.
The project website will be one of the key channels for BeCoM to disseminate the project activities and research findings
