Periodic Reporting for period 2 - EcoAdvance (Assessing and Consolidating Recent Advances on Freshwater Ecosystem Restoration)
Okres sprawozdawczy: 2023-11-01 do 2025-07-31
Building from an initial review of practice across Europe, including a review of recent literature, EcoAdvance surveyed different restoration stakeholders to identify the factors that might help or hinder a project (leading to the Prone2Sucess checklist). Subsequent consultation with successful practitioners, drawn from all areas of the restoration process, allowed EcoAdvance to develop showcases relating successful people and their projects, sharing their personal experiences and their lessons learnt.
These showcases span all European Member States offering different perspectives on potential restoration solutions and approaches, whilst demonstrating Prone2Sucess Checklist factors and Nature Restoration Regulation categories.
As part of the process of identifying what defines success in a restoration project, the team also development a restoration project visualisation tool, which presents different metrics graphically. This tool can be used to compare and communicate current state, proposed impacts and progress towards goals in different restoration projects.

The project review phase included a review, country by country of River Basin Management Plans, a literature review, a review of key projects and initiatives and a review of freshwater restoration assessment frameworks. The aim of these activities was to establish & understand the current position of freshwater restoration and, most significantly, to identify people and projects for consultation, and potential showcasing.
For the Survey phase of work, we consulted with restoration practitioners across Europe collating responses from nearly 250 consultees to help establish what factors tended to help restoration projects to be more prone to success. This led to creation of the Prone 2 Success checklist. For this phase of work the following reports detail the process and conclusions:
(i) D3-1: Report WP3-Dl-66: EcoAdvance Consultation Data
(ii) D3-2: Report WP3-Dl-65: Analysis of review responses and identification of factors driving success in different countries and settings
(iii) D3-3: Report WP3-Dl-64: Prone 2 Success Checklist
An online version of the Prone 2 Success Checklist may be accessed via the project website.
For the Showcasing phase of work we created nearly 100 showcases representing different people and their work drawn from across the EU member states. The structure of the showcases includes an interview with the expert in which they highlight their experiences and recommendations for others, supporting information structured according to their projects, focus and approach and their career journey. Key topics are listed and links with P2S factors, NRR restoration categories and relevant literature / supporting materials are provided. The showcases are searchable by a variety of categories including country, topics, P2S factors, NRR categories, stakeholder type, showcase type, people and project names and keywords.
In addition to the project deliverables, a Freshwater Restoration Visualisation Tool was also developed which allows users to map current, transitioning and planned projects on radar charts. This aids understanding, tracking of progress and provides a tool that can be used to analyse regional variations in river condition and approach. Creation of the Freshwater Restoration Visualisation Tool shows a way for presenting and communicating projects that can be valuable for many different stakeholders, from funders and managers through to practitioners and local community engagement officers.
Whilst many different projects and organisations present guidance on restoration along with project case studies (which we have mapped and signposted at https://ecoadvance.eu/projects--initiatives/(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie) in a way that allows users to access more specific forms of information), the EcoAdvance project approach differs by focusing on people and their personal experiences and recommendations. The structure and content allows different stakeholders to search for examples that reflect their particular challenges and to then hear how individuals have faced those challenges.
