Throughout its implementation, DOKI successfully delivered all core activities foreseen in the Description of Action. The project organised three accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses, four technical workshops and two international visibility workshops focused on innovative methodologies for measuring glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using iohexol-dried blood spot (DBS) sampling.
A multidisciplinary international consensus on “Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome After Renal Transplantation” was developed, addressing epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical consequences and therapeutic strategies. This represents a novel contribution to the field, as no prior international consensus had comprehensively addressed metabolic complications in renal transplant recipients.
Six expert visits and multiple staff exchanges were conducted, significantly strengthening institutional capacity in:
Population-based epidemiological research;
Lipidomic analysis;
Experimental models of renal damage;
Clinical trial design in post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM);
Advanced pharmacokinetics and renal function assessment.
The project directly contributed to the development and funding of the MULAGUA population-based cohort study, which will assess the prevalence and risk factors of CKD using gold-standard methodologies.
In addition, ten research proposals directly related to DOKI were submitted during the project period, exceeding initial expectations. Five of these proposals were led by early-stage researchers, including a young female Principal Investigator who led four submissions, demonstrating strong capacity-building and leadership development outcomes.
The project also strengthened research management capacity through the development of a Research Management Action Plan and a Horizon Europe Brief Guide to support future EU project participation.
