Breakthrough in micro-bolometer imaging

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - BRIGHTER (Breakthrough in micro-bolometer imaging)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2023-12-01 do 2024-11-30

Micro-bolometer sensors represent a compact, light, low-power, reliable and affordable solution for infrared imaging. However, they lag behind the cooled infrared sensors in performance and currently are not available for applications in the areas of absolute thermography and optical gas imaging. The EU-funded BRIGHTER project will improve micro-bolometer performance using innovative pixel technology, read-out integrated circuits, low-power edge image signal processing electronics, and image treatment algorithms. The introduction of new sensors will contribute to material and energy saving in the manufacturing sector, autonomous vehicle sensor development, and better control of gas emissions in cities and industrial areas.
BRIGHTER’s two first objectives are to provide:
- A thermal imaging solution to applications where sharp images or high frame rate are essential but that cannot be served by the current thermal imaging technologies.
- A multi-spectral imaging solution for applications requiring information from different wavelengths
To define the characteristics of the ideal complete set of products that will satisfy the end-users’ needs, the first objective was to deliver Alpha prototypes at mid-2023 to allow first use-cases realisation by the partners.
The prototypes integration is led by XENICS in the WP6. As defined in in the proposal, LYNRED provided ALPHA prototypes of fast FPA and high sensitivity FPA to be used with external filters that have been integrated on-time by XENICS for Fast cameras and by SENSIA for Broadband camera prototypes.
As the signature of the Consortium Agreement has taken more time than scheduled, first Alpha cameras prototypes have been received by end-user from October instead of June.
That was the major difficulty of this first period among many items, but a key milestone that is now passed. In parallel a first version of a Data Management Plan has been released that will facilitate the use-cases data consolidation during all the project.
Thanks to UGE, use-cases WP2 leader, on the basis of data supplied by the partners involved, 2 specific documents have been generated for Fast Pixel and Multispectral use cases to define the technical specifications for the V1 prototypes. It thoroughly analyses the use case requirements, aligns features with end-user needs, and tailors technical specifications for different use case applications. It emphasises the importance of considering operational conditions and specific technical aspects, and provides essential input to WP3, WP4 and WP5.
For the sensor WP (WP3 led by the CEA), this first period allowed the design step for the high-sensitivity pixel for the MS prototypes V1, as well as the evaluation of different filtering solutions for risk reduction. These two parts were carried out in parallel during this period as there is a common progression in the definition of the application needs (WP2), the theoretical potential of each filtering approach (design) and the manufacturability (fabrication).
The work carried out in the SENSIA-led WP4 "Hardware" focused on the development of proximity boards for multi-spectral and global shutter detectors.
For the Algorithms work package (WP5 led by SENSIA), the aim is to develop and implement the algorithms for each partner use case. Each partner has its own final use case and has started its own algorithm development.
For the communication point of view, a graphical chart has been defined by Marmara University (WP7 leader) and a BRIGHTER website plus a BRIGHTER LinkedIn have been operational current May 2023.
Implementation of the Executive board with WP leaders is done and monthly reporting files are available in the BRIGHTER SharePoint. Although unexpected issues are delaying the progression of some tasks, the first period project progression is globally in line with the DoA (milestones and deliverables).
The last part of this period was mainly used to prepare a first amendment to the project.
