Periodic Reporting for period 1 - EFFECTIVE (Enhancing social well-being and economic prosperity by reinforcing the eFFECTIVEness of protection and restoration management in Mediterranean MPAs)
Okres sprawozdawczy: 2023-06-01 do 2024-11-30
The EFFECTIVE project was launched to tackle these pressing challenges by implementing an innovative Ecosystem-Based Management System (EBMS), combining scientific research, nature-based solutions (NbS), digital technologies, and stakeholder participation. The project’s overarching goal is to enhance the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and restore degraded marine ecosystems across the Mediterranean. To achieve this, EFFECTIVE focuses on the following key objectives:
- Identify and enhance ecological corridors that connect habitats and support biodiversity across the Mediterranean Sea.
- Strengthen MPA management in four pilot areas: Mar de l’Empordà, Ebro Delta, Sardinia Septentrional, and Cavo Greco, while addressing their connectivity through the Cetacean Migration Corridor.
- Demonstrate nature-based solutions to protect and restore seabed ecosystems, ensuring long-term sustainability and preserving critical services such as carbon sequestration and habitat integrity.
- Develop a Digital Twin platform, enabling real-time data aggregation, visualization, and citizen science to promote transparent and informed decision-making.
By addressing these priorities, EFFECTIVE contributes directly to EU policy goals, such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, setting the stage for sustainable marine resource management.
- Baseline Assessments: Detailed ecological surveys and evaluations have been completed in the pilot areas, identifying key challenges such as habitat fragmentation, pollution, and insufficient management practices.
- Development of the Digital Twin: The platform’s architecture has been designed, integrating ecological, socio-economic, and management data. Preliminary tests indicate its high potential for use in marine planning and citizen engagement.
- Restoration Demonstrations: Pilot actions have been initiated in Cavo Greco and Sardinia using innovative nature-based solutions, such as the deployment of artificial reefs, seagrass transplantation, and sediment stabilization techniques.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Workshops and consultations with local communities, policymakers, and NGOs have strengthened collaboration and ensured alignment with regional and EU-level priorities.
Achievements to date include:
- Identifying ecological gaps and opportunities to enhance habitat connectivity in MPAs.
- Progressing restoration methods that address specific challenges in the Mediterranean’s unique ecosystems.
- Advancing the Digital Twin, which is expected to become a transformative tool for marine management.
- The Digital Twin for Marine Ecosystems: This platform integrates diverse datasets to offer real-time visualization and decision-making tools. It is designed to improve understanding, monitoring, and participatory management of marine ecosystems, setting a new standard for digital innovation in conservation.
- Scalable Nature-Based Solutions: The project demonstrates novel techniques for seabed restoration, such as artificial reefs that mimic natural habitats and innovative sediment stabilization methods, designed to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem services.
- Enhanced Ecosystem-Based Management: By addressing legislative gaps and promoting ecological connectivity between MPAs, EFFECTIVE provides actionable solutions for improving marine management frameworks across the Mediterranean region.
To fully realize the project’s impact, further steps will focus on:
- Policy integration: Aligning restoration strategies with broader EU goals, including the EU Green Deal and climate resilience initiatives.
- Commercial scaling: Promoting the adoption of NbS technologies through market-ready solutions and partnerships.
- Ongoing monitoring: Collecting long-term data to validate and refine the effectiveness of the implemented actions.
