Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ChroWoDoc (Mobile Primary Care Device for Documentation and Analysis of Chronic Wounds -Market Transition)

More than 12 million people worldwide suffer from chronic wounds. Due to their complex genesis these wounds require to be treated long term, resulting in annual costs of €27 billion (up to 6% of the health care costs). Treatment decisions for chronic wounds are based on recurring medical examinations, which include photographic documentation and manual measurements of the wound typically involving a ruler. Studies have shown that this state-of-the-art method leads to unreliable and non-reproducible results. Moreover, this manual procedure takes up to 20 min. and is associated with pain for patients. To provide patients with relief and to efficiently support wound healing, cureVision has developed a unique primary care technology that enables fast and accurate documentation and analysis of chronic wounds. The hardware component contains multiple cameras and detectors for automatic and contactless analysis of seven critical wound parameters. Moreover, the integrated AI automatically analyses the tissue components of the wound (%). Thus, cureVision’s mobile primary care device enables fast (90%-time savings) and accurate assessment of wound parameters.
Main technical and scientific achievements as established within the project:
(1) The development of a new, customised circuit board allowed for miniaturisation of the user-friendly device (s. image 1).
(2) The cameras together with optimised illumination allows for photo-documentation with one click.
(3) The finalisation of the software infrastructure allowed for successful implementation of multi-lingual user interfaces (s. image 2) and interfaces to cloud-based services into international contexts.
Summarised outcome:

The EU support has enabled the development of a small and user-friendly technology to accurately assess chronic wounds 90% faster than the current state of the art.
In addition, the EU funding has supported the international adaption of the technology. With the support we were able to identify international partners and tailor the system to their requires.
Regarding patient needs our hardware realises pain-free, contactless examinations as well as reliable documentation of wound healing which significantly increases healing rates.
Our next step we will use this as a basis to develop and commercialise a full diagnostic and treatment support solution for chronic wounds, based on artificial intelligence. We are currently raising funding to achieve this solution which would transform healthcare for one of the most pressing challenges of our ageing society.
