The project delivers two groundbreaking results that significantly advance the current state of the art:
The first result is the "Holistic certification approach and method for novel ATM-related systems based on higher levels of automation" (SESAR Solution 0445). This solution introduces a pioneering approach for the certification and approval of innovative airborne and ground ATM systems driven by advanced, human-centric automation, including AI-powered technologies. Moving beyond traditional safety-centric frameworks, this approach comprehensively addresses technical reliability, the impact on human performance, human-system teaming, training and skill requirements, as well as broader societal, ethical, and value-based factors. Its holistic nature allows it to accommodate the wide spectrum of both deterministic and non-deterministic algorithms, adapting seamlessly to varying levels of software automation and operational autonomy. Ultimately, this framework enables the aviation community to fully leverage advanced automation while ensuring an uncompromising, human-centric paradigm for future certification.
The second result is the "Toolkit to support the application of the guidelines to develop highly automated systems consistently with the certification approach" (SESAR Solution 0446). This product delivers preliminary guidelines designed to harmonize SESAR innovation pathways with EASA certification processes, with a specific focus on high-level automation and AI-based solutions in the ATM domain. By bridging the gap between early-stage innovation and regulatory compliance, the primary objective of these guidelines is to streamline the development of aviation systems. They encourage the early integration of certification principles directly into the initial design phase, making the entire life cycle more efficient, consistent, and certifiable. While these guidelines represent a structured, initial baseline to be progressively refined and validated, their capacity to harmonize complex processes already unlocks substantial strategic and operational benefits, such as:
- Streamlined workflows: Drastic reduction of duplicated validation and testing activities.
- Accelerated time-to-market: Faster transition from research and development to operational deployment.
- Optimized resource efficiency: Better allocation of human and financial capital across institutions.
- Enhanced traceability and consistency: Robust alignment between system requirements, design choices, and regulatory evidence.
- Strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration: Improved synergy between system developers, human factors experts, and regulators.
- Predictable and cost-effective compliance: Greater financial and timeline predictability during the formal certification phase.
- Proactive risk management: Early identification of regulatory gaps, safety risks, and operational bottlenecks.
