Safe and sustainable by design microbial and lignin-based biosurfactants sourced from sustainable feedstock for home, personal care and agrochemical application

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SURFs UP (Safe and sustainable by design microbial and lignin-based biosurfactants sourced from sustainable feedstock for home, personal care and agrochemical application)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2024-05-01 do 2025-04-30

SURFs UP ambition is to demonstrate optimized cost-efficient, Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) production in home- and personal care and agrochemical applications of second generation (2G) biologically and chemically produced biosurfactants (lactonic sophorolipids (SLs), acidic SLs, C9 glycolipids (GLs), bolasophorosides (SSs), mannosylerythritol lipid A (MEL-A), two lipopeptides (LPs): fengycin and lichenysin) and lignin based biosurfactants at 150 L-10 m3 scale. The biobased feedstocks will include wood processing co-products (sugars and lignin) and regional (food) (processing) waste.
- Selection of 16 feedstocks which fulfil technical, legal and consumer requirements, the selection of the 3 most promising biomasses is still in progress.
- A data scheme to collect information for the spatial (Life Cycle Assessment) LCA was developed
- Feedstock biomaterials was shared with partners for preliminary tests for the development of the proof of concept for allowing optimal valorisation and best conditions for the SURFs UP biosurfactants production processes. Prior the scale-up of feedstock pre-treatment, lab scale trials were carried out and proposed the steps for pilot run.
- Optimisation and demonstration of the different biosurfactants’ production is actively ongoing. Further research and optimization will be continued in the coming reporting period. Large scale production is planned for the upcoming period as well.
- First physicochemical characteristics of biosurfactants were analysed.
- The DEMO plant functional layout is ready, the equipment and raw materials procurement plan will be completed in July 2025. Meanwhile, the basic engineering and value engineering are ongoing.
- Internal workshops took place to explain the SSbD Framework, and introducing the preliminary step of scoping analysis and on Hazard assessment of the SSbD Framework.
