Periodic Reporting for period 1 - PERMANET (PERmanent MAgnet Network for the European Transition)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2024-10-01 do 2026-03-31

Podsumowanie kontekstu i ogólnych celów projektu

PERMANET addresses a major European challenge: securing a resilient, sustainable and competitive supply of rare earth elements for permanent magnets across the full value chain. The project is designed as a connected innovation network with three complementary Tech Hubs covering sustainable REE supply, circular REE innovation, and innovative magnet production and end-use. Its overall objective is to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy by combining diversified raw material sourcing, circularity, pilot and demonstration activities, industrial uptake, and long-term network sustainability. The project also aims to create a sustainable European infrastructure that can remain operational beyond the funding period and connect with other EU initiatives in the raw materials and magnet ecosystem.

Prace wykonane od początku projektu do końca okresu sprawozdawczego oraz najważniejsze dotychczasowe rezultaty

During the reporting period, PERMANET moved from concept and set-up into implementation and early validation. The partnership established governance, management and quality procedures, launched the network structure, and activated the three Tech Hubs through events, stakeholder outreach and cross-project coordination. On the technical side, the project identified and assessed multiple rare earth supply sources, including conventional deposits, mining tailings and alternative secondary resources. It validated laboratory and pilot-scale processing routes and generated the first tangible technical outputs, including rare earth concentrates, process validation results and initial product samples. At the same time, the project built the foundations for a future legal entity, a business and servicing model, investor engagement, and broader ecosystem growth.

Innowacyjność oraz oczekiwany potencjalny wpływ (w tym dotychczasowe znaczenie społeczno-gospodarcze i szersze implikacje społeczne projektu)

PERMANET goes beyond the state of the art by linking primary supply, secondary supply, recycling and magnet production within one coordinated European network. The project demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing valuable rare earth intermediates from diversified and more sustainable sources, including the recovery of rare earths from mining residues and tailings. It also validated the RARETECH® process at laboratory and pilot scale, producing mixed rare earth carbonates and Nd/Pr oxides while applying rigorous radiological and safety controls. In parallel, PERMANET created a scalable model for hub-based collaboration, with connected infrastructure, innovation governance and a post-funding sustainability framework that can support replication at European scale.
