The central idea of ATIS, proposed in cooperation with AIT, an association of larger automobile clubs in Europe, is to overcome current barriers to effective information exchange (language, organisational, standards, legal and commercial) by the use of electronic media. The project therefore has as its principle objective a contribution towards the creation of common standards for tourism information and its exchange.
Work has been conducted on the development and implementation of an international data flow of tourist information which is language independent. The Alliance Internationale de Tourisme touring information system (ATIS) data model has been developed and provides an environment in which future data requirements can be managed. This is possible in terms of providing an environment where configurations of EDIFACT messages and database definition, as well as new releases of products, can be effectively controlled.
The central development of the research is the ATIS workstation which, under a graphical user interface, includes input, translation, query and various output facilities. Several end user oriented electronic products have also been developed which prove the multiple use of a standardized dataset. These include a point of information, electronic camping and hotel guides, and a compact disk interactive (CDI) application with winter sport information.
In the course of the project, information content and format is defined in a phase of data modelling. Message development for the exchange of this data is addressed in a further phase. Throughout these phases active participation and cooperation with international standardisation organisations, such as ISO TC154 SC5 and EDIFACT BOARD MD5 Tourism and Leisure committees is envisaged.
During the initial phase of the project data collection is focused on France to test the design for the data structure and the applied technologies. In the course of the project geographic coverage is to be extended to at least six further European countries.
ATIS is a neutral information system covering the whole spectrum of tourist information needs. Information is language independent, structured, encoded and distributed using EDIFACT syntax. Open systems interconnection (OSI) standards using X.400 are utilised for transmission of information between parties.
Active cooperation between ATIS and the ULYSSES project is agreed to avoid duplication of effort.
