Discrete and Convex Geometry

Cel

The intimately related fields discrete and convex geometry are fundamental areas of pure mathematics, and have very close ties to applications. The main beneficiary is computer science (the theory of algorithms, computer graphics, network designs), but there are important connections with solid-state physics (structure and growth of crystals and quasi-crystals). The Renyi Institute has been a leading centre of discrete and convex geometry for the last two decades, but its members have much to learn in certain areas to keep pace with the fast progress of science. With the help of the Transfer of Knowledge project, the discrete and convex geometry school at the host can strengthen the scientific potential of its own, on one hand, and the whole European Research Area, on the other hand.

The discrete and convex geometry group has always been active in doing and organizing science on an international level. The ToK project can also reinforce the close contacts with scientists in Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Rumania, Ukraine, etc.; therefore the knowledge transferred to the Renyi Institute strengthens the whole region. Since discrete and convex geometry has applications in and interrelations with many other fields in mathematics, by strengthening the group, the ToK project will increase substantially the research potential of the Renyi Institute in many areas of mathematics, and of Hungarian mathematics as a whole. In particular fundamental achievements are expected from collaborations with the traditionally strong Hungarian schools of combinatorics, number theory and statistical physics.
